Andra Day has become only the second Black woman to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress, taking home the prize Sunday for her performance in The United States vs. Billie Holiday.
Day, in her acting debut, won the award for portraying the troubled jazz singer. Whoopi Goldberg, who won for The Color Purple 35 years ago, is the only other Black woman to win in the category.
Like all the recipients, Day was seen at home via Zoom and in her speech thanked “the amazing, transformative, dynamic Billie Holiday, who just transformed me with this role and with her presence and with her spirit.”
Music awards went to Diane Warren, Niccolò Agliardi and Laura Pausini, who won Best Original Song for “Io Si (Seen); Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won Best Score for Soul.
Nomadland was named Best Picture, Drama, and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm received the Best Picture, Musical/Comedy Globe. A complete list is here.
