U.K. ARTISTS STREAM BIG OVERSEAS

Analysis from U.K. label association BPI has revealed that one in every 10 songs (10.1%) streamed around the world is by a British artist. The org says the U.K.’s share of global streaming is four times greater than its share of global GDP (2.2%).

The BPI, which represents more than 450 U.K.-based record labels, carried out the analysis based on the charts of 14 major music markets, which together account for around three-quarters of global recorded music consumption. The worldwide streaming success is attributable to classic acts like The Beatles and Queen, newer superstars like Ed Sheeran and Adele and a rising wave of British talent that includes Dua Lipa, Lewis Capaldi, Stormzy, Anne Marie, George Ezra, Ellie Goulding, Rag’n’Bone Man and The 1975.

In 2019 the major labels signed 153 artists in the U.K. (up 38% from 2010), contributing to a total roster of 640 acts. Investment in A&R by independent and major labels rose to more than £250m, and labels spent more than £150m on international marketing and promotion.

On the first day of the U.K.’s newly independent status after departing the EU, Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive of the BPI, said: "A new wave of homegrown talent, backed by labels’ support, is taking British culture and business to every corner of the world. This is a new tune for a new age of opportunity. We are excited by the possibilities that streaming offers for our artists and for the continuing growth of British music.”
