Darkroom/Interscope phenom Billie Eilish has released her latest single, "Therefore I Am.” The song was produced by her brother and collaborator, FINNEAS. Eilish also dropped a self-directed music video, which was shot on an iPhone at the Glendale Galleria. By Thursday evening the track reached #1 on iTunes.
Coming off a massive livestream concert in October and her stand-alone July single, "my future," Eilish tells Zane Lowe on Apple Music about creating the new song and her forthcoming album.
“You know this song is very, very up for interpretation," she said. "I'm very curious to see what people get from it and also what they feel when they hear it. I don't know. But yeah, it's a little mean. I love it.”
On the process of making “Therefore I Am”:
“It was very fun to complete. It was fun to record, especially because it's like ... I feel like you can hear it. I feel that I sound very much like ... I'm just f-king around. I'm just joking and ... You know that? Like, stop. What the hell are you talking about? It's like, come on. It's so real. I feel like a natural, and don't take me seriously, you know?"
On creating the video:
“The video is just the way that the song feels to me of just kind of like careless and not really trying. I don't know. The video, we, number one, shot on an iPhone, which we didn't even mean to do. It's basically me running through the empty Glendale Galleria eating a donut and a pretzel. That's literally it. But like random, chaotic, don't-care shit. And it was so fun. We shot it overnight. We had barely any crew. It was crazy."
On her forthcoming album:
“I feel good. I'm very, very happy with where I'm at in making music. I love 'Therefore I Am.' I love 'My Future.' I can't fucking wait for people to hear this album that we're working on. It's like, oh my God.
“That's what we've been talking about for months, about how this year has sucked for a lot of people, and as much as I wished that I had been able to have the year I was planning on having and tour and blah, blah, blah, we would never have made this album. I mean, we would have made something, but it would have been completely different. It's not like we're making songs about quarantine; we're just in a different mindset than we would be otherwise.”
