As it rages across SoCal’s San Gabriel Valley, the deadly Bobcat Wildfire is not only threatening the Mount Wilson Observatory but also the Mount Wilson electronic reservation, where dozens of radio and TV towers, transmitters and broadcast equipment serving the L.A. market are located.
In a Monday tweet, the USDA Forest Service cautioned that the fire was “making a hard push at Mt. Wilson, defensive strategic operations are beginning from Mt. Wilson to the west.”
According to an L.A. Times report on Tuesday, overnight aerial video showed flames approaching the communications towers that stretch across the mountaintop.
Among the broadcast towers in danger of being destroyed in the blaze are those belonging to iHeartMedia’s KIIS-FM, “Real 92.3” KRRL-FM, KOST and KBIG; Entercom’s “93.1 Jack FM” KCBS-FM, 94.7 “The Wave” KTWV and KRTH; NPR’s KPCC-FM (89.3); and the L.A. TV outlets of ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, The CW and PBS—roughly two dozen channels in all.
As of Tuesday morning, only 17% of the Bobcat Wildfire had been contained.
