Hipgnosis and its investment adviser, The Family (Music) Limited, have acquired the music catalog of songwriter/producer Nikki Sixx, founding member, bassist and lead songwriter of Mötley Crüe.
With Mötley Crüe, Sixx has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide as well as achieving seven platinum or multi-platinum certifications, nine Top 10 albums, 22 Top 40 mainstream rock hits and six Top 20 singles.
Beginning with Too Fast For Love in 1981, Mötley Crüe would go on a run of seven consecutive albums to be certified platinum or gold in the U.S. In 1987, they released Girls, Girls, Girls, marking their third album in a row to hit 4x platinum.
In 1989, Mötley Crüe released their bestselling album to date, Dr. Feelgood, which remained on the chart for 114 weeks and sold 6m units in the U.S. alone.
In addition to his enormous success with Mötley Crüe, Sixx has co-written and produced for renowned artists such as the Sex Pistols’ Steve Jones and rock legends Lita Ford, Alice Cooper and Meat Loaf.
Hipgnosis has acquired 100% of Nikki Sixx’s writer’s share of PRO income and writer’s Sound Exchange in respect of the catalogue which contains 305 songs.
Before dropping a TV set into a hotel pool, Hipgnosis overlord Merck Mercuriadis said, "Mötley Crüe were singlehandedly responsible for the Los Angeles rock explosion of the 1980s, paving the way for everyone that came in their wake and putting rock music back onto Top 40 radio and the pop charts. Nikki was the catalyst and architect of all of that and we are delighted to welcome him to the Hipgnosis family."
Sixx added, "Merck and his team at Hipgnosis are an artist friendly, forward-thinking company. Looking to the future I am grateful that they will treat my music with great care and respect."
