The demo version of Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” was posted Friday as Warner sets up the 10/16 release of Wildflowers & All the Rest, the long-awaited Wildflowers reissue and comprehensive collection of unreleased tracks and rarities.
It will be released in a variety of configurations starting with the basic release, a two-CD or three-LP 140g set of 25 tracks, with five unreleased songs.
The Deluxe Edition is 54 tracks on either four CDs or seven LPs with eight unreleased songs and 24 unreleased versions. It includes 15 solo demos made by Petty in his home studio and 14 live performances of songs from Wildflowers, recorded on various tours from 1995 to 2017.
A five-CD or nine-LP (180g) Super Deluxe Edition features 70 tracks, nine unreleased songs and 34 unreleased versions, including alternate takes. This set also comes with a hardbound book, cloth patch of Wildflowers logo, sticker of Wildflowers logo, replica of the Dogs With Wings tour program (the 1995 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tour), handwritten four-song lyric reprints in vellum envelope, a litho of new and exclusive art by Blaze Ben Brooks for the song “Only a Broken Heart,” and a (numbered) Certificate of Authenticity.
Wildflowers & All the Rest—Ultra Deluxe Limited Edition is limited to 475 copies and includes the nine LPs and the same contents as the Super Deluxe Edition plus a unisex necklace hand-made by Maria Sarno in a faux-suede pouch, an exclusive lyric book with the illustrations by Blaze Ben Brooks, an exclusive 7” of “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” packaged in a custom fabric bag with a metal Wildflowers logo as the closure—designed and made by Los Angeles-based, Made Worn.
Petty’s daughters Adria and Annakim Petty and his widow Dana Petty oversaw the project along with Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench—who raved about the set in an Instagram post, embedded below. Petty’s longtime engineer and co-producer Ryan Ulyate produced the collection that Petty had set out to assemble in the final months of his life.
All the Rest refers to 10 songs from the Wildflowers recording sessions that were left off the original version and five unreleased tracks. Different versions of four other songs would appear on the soundtrack to the 1996 film, She’s the One.
