IVOR NOMS REVEALED

Songwriters Kate Tempest (right), Dan CareyJimmy Napes and Jamie Hartman lead the The Ivors nominations with two apiece. Warner Chappell Music has the most nominees with six, followed by Kobalt with five, UMPG with four, and Sony/ATV, Domino and Downtown with two apiece.

In the Best Album category, spoken word poet Tempest and producer Carey receive their first nomination for The Book of Traps and Lessons. The album is battling against Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ Ghosteen—written by Cave and Warren Ellis—giving their album trilogy of Push The Sky Away (which won in 2014) and Skeleton Tree a hat trick for nominations. Also nominated in the category are Little Simz and Inflo for Grey Area

Tempest and Carey receive their second nomination in the Best Contemporary Song category for “Firesmoke,” which is competing against “Black,”  the lead single from Dave’s debut, Psychodrama. It’s Dave’s and Fraser T Smith’s second time nominated in the category together, having won in 2018 for “Question Time.”

In Best Song Musically and Lyrically, two-time Ivor winner Napes, alongside first-time nominee MJ Cole, are up for Stormzy’s “Crown,” which follows his 2018 Best Album win for Gang Signs & Prayer. The category also sees a first-time nomination for Jamie Cullum for “Age of Anxiety” and Sam Fender for “Dead Boys.”

Napes is also recognized in the shortlist for the PRS for Music Most Performed Work for Sam Smith’s “Dancing with a Stranger” which was co-written with Mikkel Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen. Calvin HarrisJamie HartmanRag ‘n’ Bone Man and Troy Miller are in with “Giant,” and Hartman has his second nomination for Lewis Capaldi’s “Hold Me While You Wait” alongside Capaldi and Jamie N Commons.

Crispin Hunt, Chair of The Ivors Academy, said: “Our judges have recognized extraordinary works that reflect on all aspects of the human experience and demonstrate the power and importance of music, in all its forms. Everything begins with the creativity of the songwriter or composer, and this is the building block on which our industry rests."
