POMP, CIRCUMSTANCE AND PODCASTS

iHeartMedia has gathered the highlights from the scores of commencement speeches distributed over the weekend through a special podcast. Participants included Hillary Clinton, John Legend, Kesha and Mary J. Blige.

Providing inspiring words for college and high school seniors without graduation ceremonies due to COVID-19, more than 850 of iHeart’s broadcast radio stations across the country aired featured clips from Commencement: Speeches for the Class of 2020 every hour, culminating Sunday with a series of 30-minute on air commencement specials on all music stations and 60-minute specials on all talk stations.

Halsey; DJ Khaled; Khalid; Pitbull; Smokey Robinson; Sylvia Rhone; Tim McGraw; and Becky G were among the participants.

Here’s what some of the folks had to say:

Sylvia Rhone: "Discover what sets your soul on fire. You have something special and unique that no one else on this planet can duplicate. Whatever it is, whether you're good at making people smile, you can build things with your hands, you're great at math. You know how to paint or cook, or you love gardening, or writing, or organizing chaos. It doesn't matter. Oprah Winfrey once said, ‘You have to know what sparks a light in you, so that you, in your own way, can illuminate the world.’ Guide us into a new advanced world of love, kindness, and compassion. Lead us into a utopia where wealth is great health, beautiful friendships, and living your passion. You are the change that the world needs right now.”

Hillary Clinton: “Your generation has always embodied the principle that we can solve more problems together than we can alone. That has to start with someone, and why not you? After all, as one of my favorite Americans Eleanor Roosevelt said, human rights begin in small places, close to home. So does all the progress we want and need.”

Halsey: "I asked a mentor of mine what the key to success was, and they told me making the
decision. And I said to them, "Well, that seems like a pretty cheap answer. I mean, of
course, making the right decision will lead you to success. But how do you know that
you made [00:00:30] the right decision?" And they corrected me. "I didn't say making
the right decision. I said, making the decision." They told me it doesn't matter if it is
right or wrong. Action is always better than inaction. Our fear of making the wrong
decision often stops us from making any decision at all. But don't be fooled into thinking
indecision is safety, for the unknown as a bigger monster than the knowledge of your
own failure."

John Legend: “What does it mean to love people we don't know, to see the value in every single person's life, valuing every hospital worker from the doctors to the cleaning crew, valuing every worker that we now see as essential, but maybe overlooked and underpaid before, honoring every life loss to this horrible virus, whether they're in China, Iran or around the corner, whether you know them or not?”

Kesha: “This disruption may be just what we didn't know we needed to shake off the rest of old ideas and blaze ahead with a new plan. You don't need to follow the rules. There are no rules. Follow your heart. Create the new rules. Stay well. Stay strong. And remember at the end of the storm, comes a rainbow, even if you can't see it yet.”

Mary J. Blige: “These hard and uncomfortable times do not define our identity. The only thing a trial like this can show us is what we're made of, and you are everything amazing and phenomenal. It's not about a perfect performance, but a sincere heart, drive, determination and strength.”
