With nearly every festival, concert and sporting event in the spring canceled or postponed, the summer season is next in line to take a huge hit. What will happen to huge stadium shows booked in July and August?
Taylor Swift was set to be one of the headliners of the BST Hyde Park festival (recently canceled), which was a stop on her planned tour of Europe and South America this summer.
Prices for Swift's Hyde Park show started at £65, gold circle was £160, £215 for the summer garden, £250 for the terrace and diamond circle, and £275 for hydeaway or the diamond experience. They went up to £399 for a ticket that includes a night in a hotel. Many of the tiers were completely sold out at the time of cancellation.
Other dates in Swift's itinerary include festivals in Belgium, Germany and Norway in late June, Glastonbury in the U.K. (canceled), Roskilde in Denmark (canceled), shows in Poland, France, Spain, Portugal and Brazil in July, followed by Lover Fest West at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles 7/25-26, and Lover Fest East at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA 7/31-8/1.
SoFi Stadium is of particular interest, because it remains under construction, with a completion date expected just in time for Swift's pair of grand opening shows. However, construction of the stadium might not even be finished on schedule and in time for those events, as it was reported last week that they now expect potential delays due to the coronavirus pandemic. How might this also affect two more high profile shows at SoFi, Kenny Chesney on 8/1 and Guns N' Roses on 8/8?
Aside from the fact that SoFi isn't completed yet, the main reason stadium shows haven't moved yet is because the NFL and MLB have yet to announce if or when their seasons will begin. If the NFL eliminates preseason or postpones the start of the season, it opens many stadiums' availability. The NFL is slated to announce its season on 5/9. MLB has floated around the idea of a temporary Arizona-league, with no fans in attendance, as an option.
While Taylor has yet to make any statements on postponements or cancellations, her mid-summer Lover Fests could be another unfortunate casualty of the global crisis. Will she move or cancel the dates soon?
