HITS HIGH FIVE: A GRAMMY WEEK UNLIKE ANY OTHER

Let other people discuss the impeachment hearing, the Super Bowl, the Lakers’ East Coast swing, the Iowa caucuses and the pending wine tariffs. We had a big week of our own in stories as the HITS High 5 will attest.

It's a wonder if anyone's January is still dry.

Conversations throughout the industry during Grammy week focused on the fall-out from Deborah Dugan stepping away from the Recording Academy as its president and CEO. Acting Academy chief Harvey Mason Jr. sent out a letter saying he was “deeply disturbed and saddened by the ‘leaks’ and misinformation” regarding Dugan, who filed a discrimination suit with the EEOC against the Recording Academy and went on GMA and CBS This Morning to give her side of the story. Neil Portnow and Joel Katz responded with statements denying her accusations. Katz’s employer, Greenberg Traurig said they await the results of the Academy’s investigation.

Manager Ty Stiklorius was among the first to defend Dugan. Women on the Executive Committee of the Recording Academy said “We stand ready to address all concerns, allegations and accusations with facts in hand.” And the Tina Tchen-led Task Force for Diversity and Inclusion noted “The Academy’s Board of Trustees and leadership must immediately commit themselves to real reform, take concrete steps to implement all of the Task Force reforms.”

Meanwhile, Grammy week got underway with Spotify holding a party where the Best New Artist nominees performed; Dr. Dre was honored at the 13th annual P&E Wing Grammy-Week Celebration; and Island Records, Primary Wave and UMe kicked off the yearlong celebration of the 75th birthday of Bob Marley. Wondering what you’ve missed? What’s coming up? Which invitation got lost in the mail? Check here.
