MAJORS WIN INFRINGEMENT SUIT: COX PUNCHED WITH $1 BILLION VERDICT

The major labels and pubcos have prevailed in their lawsuit to hold Cox Communications liable for copyright infringement on its network—and are reaping damages to the tune of $1 billlion.

UMG, Sony, WMG and EMI were plaintiffs in the 2018 suit, which charged that some 10k musical works were pirated without Cox taking any sort of action to stem the activity—and that its actions represented a deliberate attempt to avoid stopping its users from infringing; 20k Cox subscribers were labeled repeat offenders in the suit. The jury agreed, and slapped Cox with the massive judgment.

Expect a little extra schnapps in the company eggnog around the majors this week.
