GRAMMY TALK:
RICK ROSS

Rapper, songwriter, MIAMI booster and entrepreneur Rick Ross picked up a Best Rap Song nomination for his single “Gold Roses (f/Drake).” He’s been nominated five times, his first coming in 2011 in the Rap/Sung Collaboration category for “I’m on One” with DJ Khaled.

“Gold Roses” is the closing track on Ross’ 2019 LP, Port of Miami 2 (Epic), his second full-length for the Sony label. It was produced by OZ, SykSense, Vinylz and The Rascals. The former Def Jam artist first hit the radar in 2006 with his debut album, Port Of Miami, which debuted at #1.

“Being nominated for ‘Gold Roses’ means a lot to me,” Ross confirms. “It was born from a real conversation Drake and I were having after Nipsey [Hussle]’s untimely passing. So to be recognized for it feels like we’re being given our ‘Gold Roses’ while we’re still here.”

In 2020, Ross will show off his acting chops after snagging a role in the upcoming Paramount film Coming 2 America, the sequel to the 1988 comedy hit Coming to America, both versions starring Eddie Murphy.

Ross’ latest single is “1 Question,” a collab with E-40, Chris Brown and Jeremih that samples the 1987 Keith Sweat song “Make It Last Forever.”

Though he’s had his share of hard times, from felony charges and jail time to a near-death experience following a possible heart attack in 2018, Ross has bounced back in each case and appears to be as hale and hearty as ever heading into Grammy season.
