ELTON, BEYONCE MAKE OSCAR SHORTLIST

Elton John, Beyonce and Pharrell Williams are among the songwriters whose 2019 film work has made it onto the Academy Awards’ shortlist for Best Original Song.

John is in the running with songs from two films: “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” written with Bernie Taupin, from Rocketman; and The Lion King’s “Never Too Late,” written with Tim Rice.

The Lion King is the only film with two songs on the list as Beyoncé’s “Spirit” also made the cut.

Repping Disney are Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez’s “Into the Unknown” from Frozen II, “Speechless,” written by Alan Menken, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul for Aladdin, and Randy Newman’s “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself” from Toy Story 4.

Thom Yorke, who made last year’s shortlist, returns with  “Daily Battles” from Motherless Brooklyn. Diane Warren, with 10 noms and no wins, is among the selected songs with “I’m Standing With You” from Breakthrough.

Two songwriting actresses made the list: Cynthia Erivo with “Stand Up” from Harriet and Mary Steenburgen, whose “Glasgow” is in Wild Rose.

Williams’ “Letter to My Godfather” is one of three songs on the list from documentaries; his is in The Black Godfather. ASCAP President  Paul Williams’ “Da Bronx,” written with Charles Fox, appears in The Bronx USA and Kathryn Bostic’s “High Above the Water” is in Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am.

One song on the list comes from a foreign-language film: “A Glass of Soju” from Parasite. Jon Lajoie’s “Catchy Song” from The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part is also nominated.

The nominations will be announced 1/13.
