IT'S BERRY HIP TO BE SQUARE

The intersection of Sunset and Argyle in Hollywood was renamed Berry Gordy Square on 11/25 to honor the founder of Motown. A special ceremony and sign unveiling took place on the northwest corner, to pay tribute to the iconic music entrepreneur, songwriter and producer. The festivities were attended by Gordy, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, L.A. City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, singer Thelma Houston and many other members of the Motown family.

This location has historical significance; the former Los Angeles home of Motown was located at this intersection following its move from Detroit. The “Motown Sound” reached out across a racially divided and socially charged country to transform popular music, and it was here that Gordy expanded his vision to include television and film. The legendary Gordy helped to launch the careers of superstar artists Robinson, Wonder, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Jackson 5 and many more.

“This official City of Los Angeles dedication is a fitting tribute to a man who made such lasting impressions on the music industry,” said Councilmember O’Farrell. “Berry Gordy is a hit-making songwriter, record producer, and visionary whose legacy will be forever memorialized and remembered amongst the stars of Hollywood.”
