SLATER'S CANYON AWARDED BEST DOC

Longtime manager/onetime Capitol CEO/fledgling moviemaker Andy Slater was all smiles after his film, Echo in the Canyon, won Best Music Documentary at the 2019 Hollywood Music in Media Awards on 11/20.

In his directorial debut, Slater prevailed over some heavyweights: The other nominated movies were Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Thunder Revue, Ron Howard’s Pavarotti, Cameron Crowe’s David Crosby: Remember My Name, PBSWoodstock and Clarence Avant biopic The Black Godfather. The event celebrated excellence by music composers and songwriters in film and TV.

Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas, who’s interviewed in the film, performed at the event.

Echo in the Canyon, which grossed $3.5m in theaters this summer, is currently the fifth-highest-grossing theatrical documentary of 2019. The film is now streaming on Netflix and other platforms.

After the event, Andy drove to the top of Lookout Mountain and serenaded Canyon residents with a full-throated rendition of “Go Where You Wanna Go,” as nearby coyotes howled in harmony.
