SOUL TRAIN BACK ON THE TRACKS

A Soul Train musical is back on track and has set Broadway as its destination with an ETA of 2021. Questlove and Live Nation’s Shawn Gee are among the executive producers of a tuner that stalled about three years ago.

Dominique Morisseau (Skeleton Crew, Pipeline) is writing the book; Apollo Theater Executive Producer Kamilah Forbes is the director and  Camille A. Brown is the choreographer.

Don Cornelius' son Tony Cornelius is an EP along with Questlove, Gee, Anthony E. Zuiker and Devin Keudell.

Morisseau told the New York Times, “To me, Soul Train is the story between Don Cornelius and the dancers that built that show. I thought it would be so interesting to tell the story of the dancers and Don, in connection and in contrast and in contradiction and in conflict with each other.”

Close to four years ago, CSI creator Zuiker was tapped to pen the script for a musical that had eyed a 2017 Broadway debut. That version was focused on early ‘70s hits such as The Spinners’ “I’ll Be Around,” Minnie Riperton’s “Loving You” and Gladys Knight and the Pips’ “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me”; the new announcement makes no mention of the music being considered.

Magic Johnson purchased the Soul Train Holdings back in 2012 and was talking Broadway back then, right about the time he got involved in another production called the Dodgers.
