TONYS ARE BURNING FOR HADESTOWN

Anais Mitchell’s folk opera Hadestown took home eight Tony Awards Sunday night, including Best Musical, Score, Direction and Orchestrations, while The Temptations musical secured a single win.

Mitchell’s show is based on her album of the same name, released in 2010 on Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe label. The Vermont-based singer’s work was first staged in Vermont in 2006 and started an Off-Broadway run in 2016 after productions were mounted in England.

The win for direction went to Rachel Chavkin, the only woman to helm a new Broadway musical this season, who chastised producers for not hiring more women and people of color to direct on Broadway.

“It’s a failure of imagination by a field whose job it is to imagine how the world could be,” she said in her acceptance speech.
