HOLLYWOOD SWINGING

Longtime jazz radio host LeRoy Downs, currently on KCRW, has just crossed the one-year mark of presenting jazz concerts weekly at the Mr Musichead art gallery in Hollywood.

Working with TV producer Fred Smith and Mr Musichead owner Sam Milgrom, Downs has been filling a void in the L.A. jazz scene by presenting artists such as Jean-Michel Pilc, Nicole Mitchell, David Binney, Theo Croker and Mark Dresser.

The series continues tonight with saxophonist Hitomi Oba; upcoming concerts include the band Third Eye featuring Nasheet Waits, Abraham Burton and Eric McPherson, the pianist Gregoire Maret and trumpeter Curtis Taylor. More info—and plenty of classic Blue Note-inspired posters—can be found here.
