LAURELS FOR CANYON (UPDATE)

Echo in the Canyon, one of the year's most eagerly awaited music docs, racked up the second-biggest per-theater average of the year—$51,858—on its opening weekend at the Arclight Hollywood and the Landmark in Westwood. The doc, which focuses on the beginnings of the Laurel Canyon music scene in the mid-'60s, marks the directorial debut of veteran label exec Andy Slater.

Testifying to the areas allure and staggeringly deep history in the film are an array of luminaries including but not limited to Tom Petty, Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Jackson Browne, Beck and Jakob Dylan, who narrates and interviews all of the above, as well as fronting the group of little-known but capable players who cover a brace of songs from the era.

The film had its premiere Thursday night at the Cinerama Dome (perilously close to the HITS offices), followed by a Q&A featuring Slater and Jakob Dylan, who also brought out the core musicians from the movie and on the soundtrack (just out on BMG, with an expanded playlist streaming on Spotify) to perform songs from The Byrds, The Buffalo Springfield and The Mamas & the Papas. Cat Power and more. Check out the trailer above and the 5/24 Dome live performance of Stills’ Springfield song “Questions” below.
