TEMPTATIONS GET READY FOR THE TONYS

Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations is feeling the love of the Tony Awards this morning, securing a dozen nominations, among them best musical, director and book. Hadestown led all shows with 14 noms.

Derek Baskin, who portrays Otis Williams, is nominated for Lead Actor in a Musical. Ephraim Sykes, as David Ruffin, and Jeremy Pope, as Eddie Kendricks, are up for Actor in a Featured Role. Des McAnuff is nominated for his direction.

The show, which opened in late March, also received nominations for orchestrations, choreography, costumes, scenic design, lighting design and sound design.

Sony/ATV is among the producers of the show, which had pre-roadway runs in Berkeley, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles.

“Sony/ATV is honored to represent The Temptations’ legendary song catalog and to be a collaborator of this astonishing musical about the group,” Sony/ATV Chairman and CEO Jon Platt said. “I am delighted that it has now been recognized with 12 Tony Award nominations and I want to congratulate everybody involved in the show on this incredible achievement.”

David Yazbek, who won the Original Score last year for A Band’s Visit, is nominated this year for Tootsie and will be up against Be More Chill (Joe Iconis), Beetlejuice (Eddie Perfect), Hadestown (Anaïs Mitchell), The Prom (music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin) and To Kill a Mockingbird (Adam Guettel).

Ain’t Too Proud is the only show among the Best Musical nominees featuring pre-existing music. It is up against Beetlejuice, Hadestown, The Prom and Tootsie, which has 11 noms.
