RECORD STORE DAY ROUNDUP

Need a place to spend that tax refund check*? Your local record shop will be happy to see you with cash Saturday instead of the usual stack of CDs your roommate left behind as we once again celebrate Record Store Day.

Among the high ticket items is a box of six Devo LPs, the four-LP Complete U.S. Bearsville & Warner Bros. Singles by Todd Rundgren, separate boxes of Aretha Franklin and Al Green singles; an Emmylou Harris collection of studio albums from 1980 to 1983; Eric Clapton’s three-LP One More Car One More Rider; and The Jerry Garcia Band’s Electric on the Eel: August 10th, 1991.

Vault digging has resulted in finds such as John Lennon’s raw studio mixes of Imagine and the original New York test pressing of Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks. Among the unearthed live recordings are Billy Joel’s Live at Carnegie Hall 1977; the Woodstock sets of Janis Joplin and Sly & the Family Stone; Hakwind Live at the Chicago Auditorium 21st March, 1974; a 1980 live set from the Grateful Dead; Allman Brothers Band’s Bear’s Sonic Journals: Fillmore East, February 1970; The BlastersDark Night in Philly: 1986; and a live set in England by jazz pianist Bill Evans.

Among the reissues are Rush’s Hemispheres on picture disc; an expanded edition of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s 4 Way Street; David Bowie’s Pinups and Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica.

Among the new releases are Sigur Ros’ soundtracks to modern dance collaborations, 22° Lunar Halo and Variations On Darkness; Jeff Tweedy’s Warmer; Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: Season Two Music and More; and In The Garage: Live Music from WTF with Marc Maron—Vol. 1.

There are oddities such as 3-inch vinyl releases and a Prince cassette. The full list is here.

Record stores will also host live events. Amoeba in L.A. will have guest DJ sets all day; Rough Trade in Brooklyn will have T Bone Burnett in the morning and Wayne Coyne, David J, Steve Gunn, Eli Paperboy Reed and others into the night; Fingerprints in Long Beach will host Reignwolf, Thrice, Milo Greene, Chicano Batman and Chad Smith & Josh Klinghoffer with Eric Avery; and The Meat Puppets will be at Stinkweeds in Phoenix.

* This is a joke. We are well aware that tax refunds this year are only for the wealthy whose income derives from stock deals and dividends and real estate investments. You'll still need to try to trade in that box of cleans by forgotten boy bands of the early 21st century.
