In the first roundup of Noisemakers for 2019, we present a new batch of rising professionals from different parts of the biz whose dedication and effort make their superiors look good.
It's just too bad that a look on this website reeks like a bad Easter egg left undiscovered in the heat.
Norva Denton
Sr. Director of A&R, Warner Bros. Records
Norva Denton claims he may the most-accomplished chef in the music business. The
well-liked exec, who’s earned the right to call OutKast’s Big Boi “Uncle Big” after years
of working together, promises that Wale’s next album will be his strongest work to date.
We look forward to hearing that, and to getting our paws on some of his signature
braised short ribs.
Kara Foley
Senior Director, Creative Film/TV, Pulse Music Group
She grew up listening to punk and crowd-surfing at Rancid shows, so it’s no wonder why Foley considers working with Tim Armstrong her most mind-blowing career moment. She recently
co-hosted an all-female songwriting camp with Starz VP Music Janine Scalise Boyd, creating more opportunities for female and Latina songwriters, producers and engineers. This retired
roller-derby player is a badass, especially when it comes to leveraging career-changing syncss
via hit series like Empire, Grey’s Anatomy and Riverdale.
Wayne Hampton
Co-Founder/Chief Business Development Officer, Create Music Group
Before a miscount error by Nielsen proved otherwise, Hampton and the folks at Create thought their Dummy Boy album by 6ix9ine had missed out on the #1 chart spot to Travis Scott’s Astroworld. A serious questioning of the numbers resulted in an excitement Hampton won’t soon forget, in what he calls a “David vs. Goliath moment.” He’s currently focusing on the Rick James Unvaulted album—helmed by the legend’s daughter and estate. Hampton’s also a franchise owner of Harold’s Chicken on Hollywood, so if you need a bird fix, he’s your guy.
Gabby Jones
Marketing Manager, RCA Inspiration/Sony Music
This fantasy-football player certainly felt like she was living in a real-life fantasy when she
found herself drinking coffee in the Oval Office while looking out at the White House lawn.
Over at RCA Inspiration and Sony, she’s currently working on developing partnerships to
elevate not only the music of their artists but their brands as well. Hustle and heart set this
one apart.
Johannah Juarez
Marketing Director, Live Nation
Juarez has been handling LN marketing for third-party venues including the Greek Theatre, where she worked on the Mac Miller tribute, as well as shows for Harry Styles, Christina Aguilera, Leon Bridges and Arcade Fire. In her new role, she’s handling the marketing for FivePoint Amphitheatre, Honda Center and several Central California venues. Last year,
she worked on Gorillaz’s Demon Dayz Festival. This year, there’s the Ohana Festival with Eddie Vedder, RHCP, The Strokes and more.
Maytav Koter
Founder, Good Company
Following four years at Primary Wave, Koter started her own venture in music management and A&R consulting. The Israeli expat serves as an L.A.-based A&R consultant for Asylum and Atlantic U.K., supporting their rosters in the U.S., as well as Modest! Management and Norwegian pubco Arctic Rights. On the management side, the well-connected exec, who takes pride in her ability to craft meaningful relationships (and “good company”), is looking forward to developing her roster, starting with buzzing songwriter Hayley Gene Penner.
Josh Van Valkenburg
Senior Vice President, Nashville A&R, Sony/ATV
In his mid-20s, Van Valkenburg had the honor of working with legendary songwriter Guy Clark for the last eight years of his life. Sitting in his workshop, he made sure to take in all the wisdom and second-hand marijuana smoke he could get. JVV just celebrated the 50th #1 song penned by one of his writers. He’s loved working with the likes of Ross Copperman, Jon Nite, Natalie Hemby and Chris DeStefano, and recently signed hit songwriter Josh Osborne. Since he was conceived at a bluegrass festival, it’s fair to say music is in this guy’s blood.
Mario Vazquez
New York Regional Promotion, Republic
Most recently, Vazquez has been working with Gary Spangler in overseeing the radio rollout of the Jonas Brothers reunion and “Sucker.” He’s been involved in some seriously wild events, including the private Jo Bros show they hosted in NYC for label partners and super-fans that had attendees singing every word. He specifically remembers planning and executing Taylor Swift’s reputation sessions in Nashville with an ongoing sense of awe. But if he ever decides to give up on the music biz, we hear he’d have quite the career as a masseur.
