WOLF ALICE MERCURY WINNERS

Wolf Alice were crowned winners of 2018's Mercury Prize in London last night for their second album on Jamie Oborne’s Dirty Hit label, Visions of a Life. The band accepted the prize with a big FU to an industry exec who didn’t get their schtick early on.

Politically charged singer and songwriter Nadine Shah had been the bookies’ favorite on the night, ahead of Jorja Smith, Sons of Kemet, King Krule, Wolf Alice and Arctic Monkeys. Other nominees included Florence + the Machine, Everything Everything, Everything Is Recorded, Lily Allen, Novelist and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Visions of a Life was the second #2 album from Wolf Alice, released in September last year. Taking the mic, bass player Theo Ellis said, “When we first started as a band, I remember the first label meeting we walked into. The geezer said, ‘You don’t look like a band at all, what are you? What are you supposed to be? All your songs sound different, you don’t look the same.' We never really figured it out, but here we are. So fuck you! Thank you to everyone who has ever supported us and come to a show.”
