GOOGLE COMING FOR AMAZON'S SMARTS

As the tech world continues to integrate AI into different interfaces comes the rumor that Google is planning to deliver a new smart speaker that will have a video screen.

If this is true, it allows Google to have a product in direct competition with Amazon’s Echo Show for this year’s holiday shopping season. Given that device's less-than-explosive sales, it's an interesting move that suggests greater confidence in the potential of the video-enabled-speaker market than some observers might have foreseen.

Although the Google Home line already has several customer options, Google has been actively trying to close the gap on Amazon's considerable lead in the smart speaker market. This newly-rumored device would be the first to include a screen, but must be embedded with some other hot technology, since the company is quietly targeting a whopping 3m units for its initial order.

It's a potentially contentious development as well, since there is a history of litigation (now settled) between these two companies over some key functionality of the Echo Show and YouTube.

Meanwhile, are we really already talking about the Xmas Shopping season? Kill us now.
