DAVE STEIN,
1949-2018

Dave Stein, manager and rock critic, died on 7/23 at a Long Island hospital from complications from surgery. He was 69.

In the late ’60s and early ’70s, Stein worked with manager/promoter Sid Bernstein, including Bernstein’s years with Management Three, Jerry Weintraub’s company. He was subsequently the U.S. manager for The Bay City Rollers during the height of their success, including their American TV debut on the then-new show Saturday Night Live. Stein also worked with legendary New York DJ Bruce “Cousin Brucee” Morrow, and helped recruit talent for his friend Jerry Lewis’ telethon.

“First met him (through Toby Mamis) around 1973, when he started writing the 45 singles column for me in Zoo World,” fellow music journalist Arthur Levy wrote of Stein on Facebook. “Many, many adventures in Miami Beach and N.Y. with him and his family over the next near-25 years, before we parted ways. ‘Levy!’ was his call to action.”

Stein later launched and ran Record Gems, buying and selling vinyl and CDs.
