The Top 5 Highest-Grossing Films in America Over the Weekend

Eight of the Top 10 films at the domestic box office were sequels this weekend, according to BoxOfficeMojo. In fact, two of those—Sony's The Equalizer 2 and Universal's Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!—debuted in the top spots, bowing with $36m and $34m, respectively. Both outperformed their predecessors. 

1. The Equalizer 2 (Sony) $36m 3,388/$10,574 avg. (debut)
2. Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! (Universal) $34m 3,317/$10,365 avg. (debut)
3. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (Sony) $23m 4,267/$5,425 avg. (week 2)
4. Ant-Man and the Wasp (Buena Vista) $16m 3,778/$4,268 avg. (week 3)
5. Incredibles 2 (Buena Vista) $12m 3,164/$3,641 avg. (week 6)
