Freebandz/Epic’s soundtrack to Sony Pictures’ forthcoming action-flick remake Superfly (which streeted on 6/8) is executive-produced and curated by hip-hop hitter Future, who also co-produced the film with big-screen hitmaker Joel Silver. The new flick hits screens on 6/13; it was helmed by Director X, best known for imaginative videos for Drake, Rihanna and other notables, and stars actor-singer Trevor Jackson in the title role.
The update of the 1972 original will boast music from Future (with featured guests like Lil Wayne, 21 Savage and PARTYNEXTDOOR) as well as such current noisemakers as Khalid and H.E.R., Miguel, Sleepy Brown, Zaytoven and more. Zane Lowe premiered the Khalid-H.E.R. track, “This Way,” on his Beats 1 show on 6/5.

"The original Superfly was one of the most important films at the height of the ‘black exploitation’ period of filmmaking in the early 70s," says Epic boss Sylvia Rhone. "I was in college at the time and must have seen it five times. The soundtrack produced, written and performed by Curtis Mayfield is still a classic today! Director X has captured the authenticity of the original story in a contemporary context. Recruiting Future, one of the most prolific storytellers of today, was a perfect fit."
"Future’s work on this album continues the remarkable legacy established by the original," declares Sony Motion Pictures Music Group Head Spring Aspers. “He creates a musical soundscape that not only perfectly complements and underscores the film, but brings to life a time and place in today’s Atlanta and a culture of trap music. In bringing together this incredible group of artists, Future has made an album as thrilling as the film.”
For those of you who really miss 1972, a limited-edition cassette version of the ST will be available at Urban Outfitters stores on 6/8.
