NOTES FROM OUR STASH: KANYE'S YE

While there’s still some mystery surrounding Kanye West’s new, seven-song G.O.O.D./Def Jam set, ye, we decided to get Michael Dominguez really stoned and have him give his initial impressions of the music from listening to the livestream. The music sounds cool, even if we sound like dorks. We'll have more, um, sober coverage later.

There’s a lot of Mike Dean guitar over big, slow, R&B hooks. It takes its time. Having just seven songs complements the midtempo feel. There's no classic structure in any song. Feels like a short, wild ride.

…This one’s hard, wild and catchy. Could actually have a shot at urban radio. He covers pills, mental health, Russell Simmons getting me too'd, Abercrombie (lol). Ends with Kanye screaming.

…This one sounds like Jeremih/Ty Dolla $ign on the hook. Melodic, midtempo chorus with Kanye rapping verses. Lots of voices in chorus (a literal chorus). Sounds like Justin Vernon (Francis and the Lights?), but definitely TD$ in the mix. Spoken-word bridge addressing every female who's gone through the worst times.

(…)

"Make no mistake, girl, I still love you" is the hook. Soulful sample, similar to "Slow Jam."

... Sample similar to "Otis" from Watch the Throne. Sounds like Mike Dean guitars over the sample. Kid Cudi singing? Ends with a coming-of-age chorus possibly sung by 070 Shake. Big look for her if so. "We still the kids we used to be... nothing hurts anymore I feel kinda free"

Couldn't catch enough of the end of the album on the second run... livestream ended.

Not sure what people will make of the songs, but they're very, very strong, similar to the better tracks from Life of Pablo. The beats/music felt closer to Yeezus/My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy but at a slower tempo. Very emotional, touching tone overall.
