TONYS TO HONOR SPRINGSTEEN

Bruce Springsteen will receive a special Tony Award this year for his show Springsteen on Broadway, while three musicals based on films and a TV show vie for the top prize against a lone original work, The Band's Visit.

SpongeBob SquarePants, with Sony Music Masterworks as a lead producer, and Mean Girls are up for 12 awards each, including Best Musical, where Frozen is the fourth nominee. Leslie Odom Jr. and Katharine McPhee announced the noms for the 72nd annual Tony Awards this morning.

A collection of familiar names from pop and rock music—among them Steven Tyler and Joe PerryAlex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic ZerosThe Flaming LipsLady AntebellumJohn Legend and Panic! at the Disco—are nominated for Best Score forSpongeBob SquarePants. Adrian Sutton's work for Angels in AmericaThe Band's Visit's David Yazbek and the Frozen team of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez are also nominated.

Warner Music Group chief and prolific theater backer Len Blavatnik only has one nomination this year. He's a producer of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel, which is up for Best Revival of a Musical.

The award for Springsteen—John Leguizamo will receive one as well—is likely to goose TV ratings which took a healthy dip last year. For anyone wondering, Bruce will be an Emmy shy of the EGOT; he has been nominated twice but never won an award for his TV work.

Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban will host the Tony Awards show on 6/10 at Radio City Music HallA full list of nominees is here.
