The Peabody Awards have been announced for select categories and feature a diverse array of voices, including that of Jay-Z, for his docuseries Time: The Kalief Browder Story.
The docuseries takes a powerful look inside the criminal justice system through the lense of Kalief Browder, a young black man incarcerated for three years at Rikers Island for allegedly stealing a backpack. The experience led him to take his life on his release. It was produced by Roc Nation.
Issa Rae was also honored in the Entertainment category for her acclaimed HBO series, Insecure, which explores the lives of young black people in L.A. with grace, nuance and humor.
This year's awards follow up last year's recipients, Beyoncé Knowles for her 2016 super-smash visual album, Lemonade, and Donald Glover's FX series, Atlanta.
Following on the heels of Kendrick Lamar's Pulitzer win, these awards further chronicle the profound and widening impact of black popular culture during our tumultuous era.
There are plenty of other award recipients we haven't named that you can find here, they will be accepting their awards at the Peabody Gala in NYC 5/19.
