TRIBECA TUNES UP

Documentaries on Ed Sheeran, Patti Smith and the history of Blue Note Records are among the films that will unspool beginning Wednesday at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Also on the slate are films about the late Disney songwriter Howard Ashman, composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, the blues duo Adam & Satan, Studio 54 and a 960-lb. Elvis impersonator. In addition, a conversation between John Legend and Sara Bareilles is part of the festival’s talks program.

Songwriter, Murray Cummings’ chronicle of the creation of Sheeran’s ÷, premieres 4/23. Sophie Huber’s Blue Note Records: Beyond the Notes also premieres 4/23 and will include a live performance by Robert Glasper, Derrick Hodge and Kendrick Scott.

Horses: Patti Smith and Her Band, executive produced by Jimmy Iovine, was shot at the Wiltern Theater on Smith’s 40th anniversary tour of her debut album. The premiere at the Beacon Theater on 4/23 will include a performance by Smith and the band.

Howard, Don Hahn’s doc on The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast lyricist Ashman, premieres Sunday as does Mr. Soul, a doc on the TV show Soul that ran 1968 to 1973.

Scott Balcerek’s Satan & Adam, which premieres Friday, chronicles the partnership of blues harpist Adam Gussow and Sterling “Satan” Magee. Matt Tyrnauer goes beyond the velvet rope in Studio 54, which screens 4/24.

Bathtubs Over Broadway follows Steve Young, a writer on Late Night with David Letterman, as his vinyl searches lead him to a world of industrial musicals. It premieres Saturday.

In Big Elvis, premiering Friday, a 960-pound Elvis impersonator becomes convinced he is Elvis Presley's secret love child. Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda opens 4/23.

The festival also has docs about Gilda Radner, Air Jordans and Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story, executive produced by Jay-Z. The schedule is here.
