BMG'S BIG YEAR

Bertelsmann has singled out BMG as one of its star divisions, reporting a 21.8% growth in revenue in 2017. The music company was even stronger outside Germany, as income rose 23.1%.

BMG’s revenues last year were $573 million; EBITDA was up nearly 10% to $118m.

Over the course of the year, BMG moved from an acquisition business to a development model at its label and publishing units.

The privately held company noted the company reported “higher revenues across all market segments and regions,” attributing it to “organic growth and acquisition, especially in the recorded music business and in the British, U.S. and Australian publishing business.” The company also singled out its entry into country music via its acquisition of BBR Music Group and the signings of Fergie and Kylie Minogue.

Bertelsmann Chief Executive Thomas Rabe said the company will continue to make a push on the digital side of its business, which includes book publishing, magazines, television and music. It was 46% of Bertelsmann's total sales last year, which he expects to rise above 50%. He additionally pointed out to shareholders that Lil Dicky is, like, mad dope.

Bertelsmann also owns broadcaster RTL and publishers Gruner + Jahr and Random House. Group operating earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization edged up 2.7% in 2017 to a record high of $3.3 billion.
