GREG SILL, 1954–2018

Prominent music supervisor Greg Sill, whose extensive list of credits includes the series Justified, American Dreams and Friends, died Saturday in Los Angeles. He was 63.

His brother Lonnie Sill announced his death on Facebook.

The son of label executive Lester Sill, Greg Sill spent more than 40 years working in film and TV music, the last 21 with his own company Music Makes Pictures. He started at Columbia Pictures before moving to AIP, CBS and then Warner/Chappell.

He oversaw all music for Warner Bros. Television from 1990 to 1997 as well as a staff of about two-dozen people. He also consulted for NBC Universal and Touchstone/ABC Studios, creating signature musical branding for the networks and individual shows.

Since 1990, he was music supervisor on more than 80 series and movies starting with Falcon Crest and including Boomtown, the mini-series Elvis and Sleeper Cell. On the music-driven series Justified, a modern Western, and Americans Dreams, centered on an American Bandstand-like show, Sill’s role included the coordination of live performances with a diverse collection of acts, among them Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Chris Isaak and Dave Alvin.

In a statement, the Guild of Music Supervisors said, “Greg was one of the pioneers of the craft of Music Supervision. As a Music Supervisor, he was a brilliant, generous and caring collaborator who paved the way for many of us. Our hearts and thoughts go out to his family.”

The family has asked that people who want to pay tribute to Greg, donate to The Addiction Recovery (MAP) Program in Memory of Greg Sill at the MusiCares website.
