Today is the 50th anniversary of Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” hitting #1. To commemorate the achievement, Rhino President Mark Pinkus presented a plaque commemorating the single being certified 3x platinum to his widow Zelma Redding and daughter Karla Redding-Andrews.
Released in January 1968, just a month after his tragic death in a plane crash, it was Redding’s only song to top the charts. Redding’s music, and the “Dock of the Bay” anniversary, were celebrated in January at the Apollo Theater. Rhino will release a new Redding collection Dock Of The Bay Sessions on 5/18.
