LOPEZES, DESPLAT TAKE HOME MUSIC OSCARS

Songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez won the second Oscars of their careers Sunday night, as did composer Alexandre Desplat.

The Lopezes won for “Remember Me” from Coco, which Miguel and Natalia Lafourcade performed in the film and onstage at the 90th annual Academy Awards. The husband-wife team had previously won for “Let it Go” from Frozen; the latest win made Robert Lopez the first ever double-EGOT.

Desplat won for scoring Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, thanking the director for allowing him to explore “the melancholy of love” in his music. Desplat, a nine-time nominee, had previously won in 2014 for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel.

The musical performances crystallized the themes of diversity and equality that gave this awards show its sense of purpose. These included Common and Andra Day teaming up on “Stand Up for Something” with 10 activists on stage, among them farmworkers organizer Dolores Huerta and chef Jose Andres; Mary J. Blige's similarly uplifting "Mighty River" from Mudbound; and "Remember Me."

But the biggest needle mover was a rousing rendition of “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman, which continues to have the #1 album at iTunes, while the song is #2 (Coco is #6 early on Monday).

A reverent, understated Eddie Vedder performed Tom Petty’s “Room at the Top” during the In Memoriam segment.

Baby Driver, the lone truly music-driven nominated movie, lost in Sound Mixing and Sound Editing to Dunkirk.

During the breaks, Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still" and "Live in the Moment" were used in spots for Cadillac and T-Mobile, respectively, while the American Idol commercials just kept coming.
