The first weekend of the Winter Olympics, featuring the figure-skating team competition in prime time, has given a lift to a previously obscure Coldplay song. Adam Rippon, the disarmingly goofy skater who contributed to Team USA’s bronze medal after taking on Vice President Mike Pence over gay rights, skated to “O,” a hidden track from 2014’s Ghost Stories, which makes its first-ever appearance on the iTunes charts at #17.
His teammates Alex & Maia Shibutani, meanwhile, went with the band's "Paradise" and "Fix You"; the former is at #84, while the latter hasn’t charted.
The U.S. skaters’ embrace of the polarizing U.K. band got quite a reaction on social media. "That was great skating,” read one tweet. “Coldplay still sucks."
