QUINCY TELLS IT
LIKE IT IS

Quincy Jones made a timely and provocative point during a much-discussed new interview in New York magazine. When asked whether he was surprised by all the revelations about the difficulties women face in the entertainment business, the legend replied, “Women had to put up with fucked-up shit. Women and brothers—we’re both dealing with the glass ceiling.”

Q was in a feisty mood throughout the conversation. Michael Jackson stole from Donna Summer, Ringo was a terrible drummer, Coltrane based everything on a Nicolas Slonimsky book and the music business is all bean counters. Plus, Q even knows who had JFK killed.

He believes Paul Allen is just as good a guitarist as Jimi Hendrix and that today’s musicians pay no attention to the past. But there are a few who are doing good work: Bruno Mars, Chance the Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Mark Ronson.

And in case you were not aware, Marlon Brando slept with Richard Pryor. The full interview is here.
