ELTON JOHN PLOTS FINAL WORLD TOUR

With typical theatrical flair, Elton John announced a final tour that will last close to three years and include 300 concerts. Titled Farewell Yellow Brick Road, the tour starts 9/8 in Allentown, Pa.

“My priorities have changed,” Elton said Wednesday afternoon at Gotham Hall in New York following a five–minute VR experience and a two-song performance ("Tiny Dancer" and "I'm Still Standing") that was beamed to The Troubadour in L.A. where his lyricist Bernie Taupin was the host. “After having children, we sat down in 2015 with their school schedules and I said ‘I don’t want to miss this.’ When I stop they’re going to be 10 and eight. … I’ll be 74.

“I’ve been touring since 1969 and this a way of saying thank you” to fans, he told moderator Anderson Cooper.

The tour, which he says will be “the most produced show I’ve ever done,” will go through North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Australasia before reaching its conclusion in 2021. John will play Madison Square Garden on 10/18-19 and 11/8—“my favorite place to play in the world; it’s magic,” he said—and Staples Center on 1/22-23/2019.

John’s presentation included a VR that covered his career from his U.S. debut at the Troubadour to landmark events such as his Dodger Stadium concert and The Lion King. He was adamant that he does not see a hologram replacing his live act. “That’s a bit freaky,” he said, comparing it to duet albums with dead singers.

John said he intends to continue writing and “make a couple more albums” after the tour concludes. He swears he won;t change his mind.

"I'm not Cher," he joked, "even though I like wearing her clothes."

He has 16 shows booked in Europe beginning 5/2/2019 in Vienna with more being added. John plans to play 13 cities in the U.K. in 2019 and 2020; the Asia leg is set for November and December 2019 followed by Australia and New Zealand. South America is on the 2020 docket.
