BLIGE, COMMON RECEIVE OSCAR NOMS

Mary J. Blige received two Oscar nominations this morning, one for Best Supporting Actress, the other for Best Original Song.

Blige, who wrote “Mighty River” for Mudbound with Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson will be up against Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the duo behind La La Land and Dear Evan Hansen who won the Golden Globe for “This is Me.” Keala Settle sings it in The Greatest Showman.

The music categories are full of previous winners and nominees. Diane Warren has received her ninth Academy Award nomination, getting a nom for Marshall’s “Stand Up for Something,” which Andra Day and Common performed. Common wrote the lyrics with Warren; he has an Oscar—for “Glory” from Selma—while she has yet to win.

EGOT winner Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez return with the only song among the five written for an animated film, “Remember Me,” which Miguel sings in Coco. Coco is also nominated for Best Animated Feature.

Besides Blige, the other rookie in the category is Sufjan Stevens, who received his first Oscar nomination for “Mystery of Love” from Call Me By Your Name.

The composers nominated in the Original Score category repeat the Golden Globe choices with one tweak: John Williams is nominated for Star Wars instead of The Post.

Otherwise, Globe winner Alexandre Desplat, for “The Shape of Water,” is again joined by Carter Burwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood (Phantom Thread) and Hans Zimmer (Dunkirk).

Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water” leads the pack with 13 nominations including Best Picture, Director, Actress and Supporting Actor and Actress. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received nine and Dunkirk has seven. In addition to those three films, Best Picture noms went to Call Me By Your Name, Darkest Hour, Get Out, The Phantom Thread and The Post.

The Academy Awards will air live on ABC on 3/4. For a full list of nominees, click here.
