In its Grammy Watch: The 10 Biggest Questions About Tomorrow's Nominations, the Industry's Bible ponders a few things we're all wondering about. But they also pose some questions that now qualify as dumb, since they've already been answered. Chief among these: "Will any of the One Direction solo dudes be up for best new artist?"
As our Grammy Whisperer, Paul Grein, noted in his 10/19 piece, Grein on Grammys: Who's In, Who's Out for Best New Artist:
Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne. The One Direction alums all had big hits during the year. 1D was never nominated for a Grammy (!), so these alums could conceivably have been eligible here as solo artists, but the committee (wisely) decided that their 1D success gave them prominence.
So: asked and answered. We agree with Paul and the committee that it was a wise decision, because these artists became known to millions and sold tons of records and headlined gigantic tours and had every other kind of mass exposure and success as 1D. So while their solo careers are new, they are not.
