A 69 CENT RUN FOR #1

Taylor Swift’s new single has run back to #1 at iTunes following a price drop to 69 cents. Who else is benefiting from strategic pricing?

Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” (Big Machine) had been topped last week by Republic’s Post Malone and Capitol’s Sam Smith when all three were a buck twenty nine. The price remains the same for “rockstar,” now #4, and “Too Good at Goodbyes,” at #9.

Three other songs in the Top 10 are 69 cents: Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow”; Logic f/Alessia Cara & Khalid’s “1-800-273-8255”; and Demi Lovato’s “Sorry Not Sorry.”

Pop-rock acts appear to be consistently sticking to full price. KIDinaKORNER/Interscope’s Imagine Dragons has two songs in the Top 10; Portugal. The Man, Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5 and P!nk are also in the Top 20 with full-price singles.

Country acts, too, are getting full price payments as well: 10 country songs sit between between #11 and #50, all priced at $1.29. In fact, only four songs are priced at 69 cents among those 40 slots, three of them being pop songs that have already spent time in the upper reaches of the chart.

As we declared a few months ago, low pricing can create a loud noise and provide access to the coveted real estate on the iTunes store’s front page. Meanwhile, we’re still trying to figure how to put quarters in the computer.
