CHART STORY: GOING FOR THE GOLD
Foo Fighters have topped this week’s Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) Chart, as their ninth studio album, Concrete and Gold (Roswell/RCA), moves 130k units. This marks the fourth rock album to hit #1 this year, so throw some fuckin’ goat, dammit!
The second highest-charting new release belongs to South Korean boy band BTS, whose slickly produced fifth album, Love Yourself: Her (Bighit Entertainment via The Orchard), can be found at #7 with nearly 31k. The album, which features a song called “Best of Me” that was co-written and co-produced by The Chainsmokers’ Andrew Taggart, immediately soared to #1 at iTunes in 73 territories upon release (including the States). Barbaric's country stalwarts Big & Rich ride to #8 with 27k+ for Did It for the Party.
Two more albums end up debuting in the Top 15 this time around. Prophets of Rage’s eponymous project bows at #14 with north of 23k. And just below that (with a number that only differs by 100 or so units), the rockers of Nothing More and their independently released The Stories We Tell Ourselves (Better Noise) appear at #15.
Meanwhile, on the Album Sales Chart, RCA duo Superfruit—consisting of Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying (from Pentatonix)—also make the Top 15. There, it looks like this: Foos #1, Big & Rich #2, Prophets #3, Nothing More #4, BTS #6, Superfruit #8.
As for noteworthy moves made on the SPS chart, last week’s #1, Thomas Rhett’s Life Changes (Valory/BMLG), enjoys a solid second week, earning another 41k. Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. (TDE/Interscope) returns to the Top 5 at #4, while the buzzing XXXTENTACION’s 17 (Bad Vibes Forever/EMPIRE) holds at #5. XXXTENTACION has three tunes on our Song Revenue Chart: “Jocelyn Flores” #7, “Fuck Love” #13 and “Everybody Dies in Their Nightmares” #34. By the way, in our nightmares, we usually don’t die; we’re just on a perpetual print deadline.
Following the release of new single “rockstar,” which will appear on his upcoming set, Beerbongs & Bentleys, and features 21 Savage, Post Malone’s debut album, Stoney (Republic), rises #16-10. In tandem with that move, “rockstar” impressively debuts at #1 on our Streaming Songs Chart. The track earns a monster 36.7m streams in its premier week, more than doubling the #2 song (“Bodak Yellow” by Cardi B) and surpassing the bow of Taylor Swift's “Look What You Made Me Do,” which adds 11.2m streams this week, good for #6 on that chart.
Sticking with SPS, SZA’s CTRL (TDE/RCA) hops #14-12, Drake’s More Life (YMCMB/Republic) jumps #21-18, The Weeknd’s Starboy (XO/Republic) goes #26-22 and 2 Chainz’s Pretty Girls Like Trap Music (Def Jam) moves #30-28.
When it comes to the battle for SPS marketshare, SME leads with 40%, UMG is #2 with 35% and WMG is #3 with 19%, while the indies follow with 6%.
Streeting this week are sets from Island’s The Killers, BMG’s Fergie, Bendo/Warner Bros.’ Macklemore, Reach/Columbia’s Lecrae, Big Machine’s Midland and Warner Nashville’s Chris Janson, as well as Exile’s Van Morrison.
