AIM AWARD WINNERS 2017

The Association of Independent Music Awards took place in London last night, where winners included Because Music, Young Turks, Warp Records Steve Beckett and Stormzy. During the ceremony, Play It Again Sam MD and U.K. indie stalwart Peter Thompson announced his retirement.

Because Music won an overdue Independent Label of the Year gong for success with Christine & the Queens, Major Lazer, Metronomy and more. Founder Emmanuel de Buretel thanked his team and outgoing SVP of A&R and Marketing Jane Third, who’s joining [PIAS] as Chief Creative Officer, for her ten year tenure.

Stormzy took home the Album of the Year for his debut, Gang Signs & Prayer (#Merky), as well as Most Played New Independent Act. Young Turks act Sampha was Breakthrough of the Year, and the label also took Independent Track of the Year for The xx’s “On Hold."

A collective sigh of relief could be heard when Counterfeit (Xtra Mile) won Best Live Act over Rick Astley, and rapper ShaoDow (DiY Gang) was honored as Hardest Working Artist. Jiln’s Black Origami (Planet Mu) was named Best Difficult Second Album, while her label was Best Small Label. DJ Shadow’s “Nobody Speak f/Run The Jewels” (Mass Appeal) was Video of the Year.

The Innovator Award went to British indie collective Boy Better Know—which has spawned artists including Wiley, Skepta and JME—and U.S. metal act The Dillinger Escape Plan were celebrated for their Outstanding Contribution to Music. Steve Beckett was named Pioneer for his groundbreaking work with Warp, dedicating the award to his late co-founder, Rob Mitchell.

Finally, Special Catalogue Release of the Year was Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' Lovely Creatives: The Best of (Mute), Best Independent Festival went to Lost Evenings and Indie Champions were Katie Riding and Joe Daniel of Indie Label Market.
