The Top 5 Highest-Grossing Films in America Over the Weekend

Fox's War for the Planet of the Apes debuted at #1 at the domestic box office this weekend, pulling in approximately $57m—slightly higher than the studio's expectations. When it comes to the franchise, War finished its first week with more than 2011's Rise, but less than 2014's Dawn, although the latter did have a $20m-higher budget.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate's talked-about The Big Sick expanded, tacking on 2,271 theaters, earning around $7.6m (+112.5%) and jumping #8-5.

1. War for the Planet of the Apes (Fox) $57m 4,022/$14,048 avg. (debut)
2. Spider-Man: Homecoming (Sony) $45m 4,348/$10,396 avg. (week 2)
