U.K. CHARTS: CHARITY SINGLE HITS #1

The Artists for Grenfell charity single, “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (Syco), is #1 on the U.K.’s Official Singles Chart with 170k combined sales—the majority of which were downloads—in under 48 hours. Over on albums, rock duo Royal Blood have scored their second #1 with How Did We Get So Dark (Warner Bros.).

Of the 170k copies sold of “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” 169k were downloads. Proceeds will go to those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire in London last week. The track, organized by Simon Cowell and featuring more than 50 artists, among them Stormzy (pictured), Emeli Sande, Robbie Williams and Paloma Faith, is the fastest selling single of the year and had the biggest opening day this decade. It got a primetime TV promo spot when ITV premiered the video before popular British drama Coronation Street on Wednesday night.

The song is 69k combined sales ahead of this week’s #2, Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber with “Despacito” (Polydor). DJ Khaled, Rihanna and Bryson Tiller's "Wild Thoughts" (Black Butter/We The Best) is the second new Top 5 entry at #3, followed by Liam Payne f/Quavo’s “Strip that Down” (Capitol) at #4 and “Unforgettable” (Black Butter) by French Montana f/Swae Lee at #5.

Over on the Official Albums list, Royal Blood are 22k combined sales ahead of Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Atlantic). The band will celebrate their second #1 with the rest of the British music industry at Glastonbury this weekend where they play the Pyramid Stage today.

Nickelback are the second highest new entry with ninth studio album Feed the Machine (BMG) at #3, while Lorde is #5 with Melodrama (Virgin EMI). Rag’n’Bone Man is still at #4 with Human (Columbia).

Fleet Foxes’ first album in six years and their major label debut, Crack-Up (Warner Bros.), is #9 and Ride with Weather Diaries (Wichita) is #11.
