The Top 5 Highest-Grossing Films in America Over the Weekend

Buena Vista/Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales—the fifth installment in the Johnny Depp-led franchise—was the most successful film at the domestic box office over Memorial Day Weekend, debuting at #1 with approximately $62m.

Meanwhile, according to Box Office Mojo, Disney's live-action version of Beauty and the Beast became only the eighth film to cross the $500-million mark domestically. Overall, the weekend was down around 15% compared to Memorial Day Weekend last year when both X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice Through the Looking Glass delivered "underwhelming openings."

Dead Men Tell No Tales brought Disney's domestic cume for 2017 to over $1 billion on Friday, marking the second fastest time a studio accomplished such in the U.S.—second only to Disney's record performance last year when the studio surpassed $1 billion in early May.
