HARRY HEADS IN NEW DIRECTION ON SNL

Harry Styles gave his debut performances as a solo artist on the 4/15 edition of Saturday Night Live, marking the beginning of the month-long setup for his self-titled Columbia LP, hitting on 5/12.

It was an auspicious occasion, in that this was the first-ever show in the long-running series to air live coast-to-coast; former cast member Jimmy Fallon was the no-brainer choice to serve as host.

Lead single “Sign of the Times" got a suitably impassioned treatment, with Styles firmly establishing his rock-star bona fides on the SNL stage. His second song, the harmony-rich "Ever Since New York," featured a folk-rock groove and Badfinger-ish guitar line.

He also appeared in several sketches, and the screams of his fans resounded throughout the show.

At the conclusion of the East Coast broadcast (which was live on the West Coast as well), "Sign" had moved up to #9 at iTunes. As of 9:00 EDT Monday morning, it had risen to #6.
