THIS CHART STORY GETS DARKER

Fifty Shades Soundtrack Dominates

Republic’s Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack, which is getting much more love than its visual counterpart, clearly likes it on top, as the set bows at #1 on the HITS Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) Chart with 125k.

Brett Young’s self-titled album on Big Machine serves as the Top 15’s only other debut this week, coming in at #15 with 27k. Mind you, this is the third consecutive #1 country album for Scott Borchetta’s BMLG.

What about the post-Grammy Awards bumps? Adele’s 25 (XL/Columbia), which received trophies for Album, Record and Song of the Year (as well as others for smaller categories), soars #21-6 with 47k, while Beyoncé’s Lemonade (Columbia), which many believe was robbed of an Album of the Year win, leaps #33-8. Coloring Book, by Best New Artist winner Chance The Rapper, goes #44-23.

Capitol Nashville’s Keith Urban, who performed on the show, but also received seven ACM Award nominations in five categories just the other day (including ones for Album and Entertainer of the Year), sees his Ripcord jump #37-21. Columbia Nashville’s Maren Morris, who delivered a stunning performance of her “Once” with Alicia Keys on the Grammy stage, re-enters at #26 with debut album Hero; she’s up for six ACMs in four categories (including Album). Another ACM nominee, Jason Aldean, who’s in the running for Male Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year, also re-enters at #33 with his Broken Bow set, They Don’t Know.

Following that much-talked-about mic moment, Metallica’s Hardwired…To Self-Destruct (Blackened) comes back in at #38, while A Tribe Called Quest, who gave the evening the political roundhouse kick it needed, returns at #43 with We got it from Here... Thank You 4 Your service (Epic).

Oh, and we must have forgotten to mention that, thanks to her rise in popularity at the Moscow Ritz Carlton, Joy Villa’s I Make the Static—originally released in 2014—appears at #11. Expect that to fall drastically next week, though.

When it comes to SPS marketshare, UMG leads with 52%. Then there’s WMG at #2 with 21%, SME at #3 with 21% and indies at #4 with 5%.

Over on the Album Sales Chart, Fifty Shades is #1 with 73k and Young is #12 with 20k. On this chart, one other debut makes the Top 15; that’s Andrew McMahon in the WildernessZombies on Broadway (Vanguard), which enters at #15 with around 15k.

Here, Bruno Mars24k Magic goes #11-2, Bey goes #19-3 and Adele goes #18-5.

Also, due to a surge at Target, Garth BrooksThe Ultimate Collection (Pearl) sprints #45-11. And the results from the Album Sales marketshare battle look a bit different when compared to the SPS rankings.

Here, UMG is #1 with 46%, while SME is #2 with 27% and WMG and the indies follow with 19% and 9%, respectively.

Streeting this week are albums from A1/Freebandz/Epic’s Future, Blue Note’s Ryan Adams and RCA’s Charlie Wilson.
