SNOW CRAMPS GRAMMY TRAVEL PLANS

New Yorkers flying to L.A. Thursday for Grammy week festivities will have to sit tight—or pray their flight is early enough to get ahead of a snowstorm that’s expected to pound the NY/NJ area.

This afternoon, American Airlines had already canceled 10 of its Thursday direct flights from JFK to LAX; they expect Thursday’s 7pm flight to be the first to take off. Alaska Airlines is a little more hopeful as they have canceled only eight of their 13 flights prior to 7pm.

Delta, Virgin and Jet Blue either have magical powers or are asking pilots to re-create the opening scene of Flight; they have not announced any cancellations.

All airlines flying out of Newark Airport have canceled their flights in the a.m., while afternoon flights are currently unaffected. La Guardia has no direct flights to L.A.

The forecast at JFK is for snow to start falling around 4am, become heaviest between 8am and 10am and taper off around 3pm. All of this will be accompanied by winds up to 29mph; the winds are expected to continue into Friday morning.

Newark Airport will get hit with the storm before it makes its way out to Long Island, but its 20+mph winds will taper off Thursday evening.
