SONY U.K. CONTROLLED RADIO DIAL IN 2016

Jason Iley’s Sony Music U.K. has another big win to celebrate after taking the #1 spot on the 2016 Top 100 radio airplay marketshare chart for the first time since Radiomonitor began calculating such stats in 2011, Music Week reports. David Joseph’s Universal U.K. had come out on top every year up to 2016.

Last year, thanks in large part to RCA’s stellar performance, Sony bucked that trend with a 39.66% share compared to 28.94% in 2015.

Universal’s airplay share dipped from 38.87% to 33.09% in 2016, while Max Lousada’s Warner Music Group U.K. finished with 21.83% of the market, down from 26.43% in 2015.

Looking at the label competition, RCA more than doubled its marketshare of the Top 100, zooming from 6.75% to 15.82%, edging #2 Virgin EMI with 15.33%. Atlantic claimed the third largest share in 2016 with 11.76%, followed by Island with 9.38% and Columbia with 8.50%.

The rest of the field: Polydor (8.39%), Syco (6.37%), Sony Music (5.48%), Warner Bros. Records (4.46%), Parlophone (4.33%) and Ministry of Sound (2.83%).
